- Considering a PhD abroad? Think Germany! All Doctoral Programmes in Germany are tuition-free!! Due to this reason each year Germany finds many students from the world over scampering for a place, which suggests a fierce competition. However, since not many Indian students apply to Germany as compared to the US or UK, it is relatively easy for an Indian student to get into a research programme in Germany. This could very well be your chance!
There are two ways you can apply for for a PhD in Germany: Independent Research under supervision and Structured PhD Programme
- Before applying for a PhD Programme, please find out about the academic system and procedures in Germany, as it could be quite different from that in the US or UK. It differs considerably from the Indian system too. For instance, Germany does not have a system of graduate schools, centers and colleges. In fact, there is no binding curriculum that guides a student throughout the programme, which is both good and bad at the same time. It is bad because, the courses lack structure which could be quite unnerving for an Indian student used to the very rigid and mechanical structure of higher education in India, specially if it is his/her first time abroad. On the other hand, the German system is extremely good for more matured and self-motivated students because due to lack a binding curriculum, a student can choose from a variety of programmes, precisely the programme that inspires him/her the most for a Doctoral Research. So guys and gals out there, if you're looking for an unconventional, yet rewarding research degree abroad, consider going to Germany. And no, you DON'T need to know Duetsche, although it could certainly be a help if you do.
